Located in the city of Ningbo, this residential interior investigates how textures, while often attributed to the natural finish of materials, can be re-introduced by the act of sculpting and articulation of walls and design objects. Our project draws inspiration from the modernist ethos and the artisanal sensibilities of the Arts and Crafts movement, where synthesis of materiality, craftsmanship, and spatial poetics informs our approach.
The design emphasizes creating a sense of allure and intrigue through gentle curves, which subtly guide movement and the progression of spaces within the apartment. This allure is further deepened by the gradual shifts between light and shadow, while the rich materials of dark wood and travertine maintain a warm atmosphere throughout the space.
The design also explores the intersection of sculpture and functionality, questioning what it means to use sculptural elements like feature walls and millwork to serve both as storage, partitions and workspace.
The design blends warmth and softness, offering an overall sense of simple tranquility and modern elegance.
